Greta Thunberg was legally intercepted by Israel in international waters

Greta Thunberg’s boat was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters while en route to Gaza in an attempt to break the blockade and deliver humanitarian aid. Many are claiming that this action was illegal because the boat was in international waters. However, international maritime law in situations of conflict and war, codified in the San Remo Manual, does grant Israel the right to intercept and arrest crew members in international waters if the vessel is attempting to enter an exclusion zone, such as Gaza.

Greta stated in several interviews that the 12 crew members were “just peaceful volunteers.” However, many of them are involved in radical and antisemitic activities, glorifying terrorist leaders from Hezbollah.

For example, one of the crew members is Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, who attended the funeral of Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader eliminated by Israel last year, in February. Ávila praised Nasrallah as a “beloved leader” and a “martyr.” He also stated he felt “very honored” and “very happy” to attend the funeral of the terrorist group’s leader, as “he inspired people around the world.”

Israel has announced that the 12 crew members will be deported to their countries of origin and that during the trial, they will be forced to watch a 43-minute video showing the atrocities filmed by Hamas militants' body cameras during the October 7, 2023 attacks.
